Firebase for SaaS MVPs: Data Model, Auth & Costs
Choose Firebase services for a SaaS MVP: Firestore documents versus SQL Connect, authentication, product-specific quotas and workload-based billing.

Editorial judgment
Choose a database product before choosing the platform label.
Consider Firebase when its client SDKs and Google Cloud integrations fit your app and you can specify the actual database product. Firestore's document model is a different decision from SQL Connect's PostgreSQL workflow. Compare Supabase for a PostgreSQL-centered backend, and model access rules, query volume and recovery before comparing headline free plans.
Official facts
What the provider documents
The facts below come from the dated official sources linked beside each entry. Use them to check the workflow and plan constraints before trying this tool; fit, budget cautions and evaluation steps are our editorial judgments.
- Firebase offers the no-cost Spark and pay-as-you-go Blaze plans. Availability, quotas and pricing are product-specific rather than a single backend-wide allowance. [Source 1]
- Cloud Firestore is a document database with client synchronization and offline support. Query and listener patterns are part of the workload to estimate. [Source 2]
- Firebase SQL Connect, reached by the former Data Connect documentation URL, uses Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL and schema-defined GraphQL operations, with Firebase Authentication integration. [Source 3]
A good fit when
- Your client app benefits from Firebase SDKs and its selected database model.
- You can estimate usage by service and test authorization for anonymous and cross-account requests.
Reconsider when
- You treat Firebase as one flat-priced database or assume it only supports NoSQL.
- You cannot explain how listeners, reads, storage or extra Cloud services affect costs.
Editorial interpretation
Read the bill beyond the headline
Price the selected products and region rather than the Firebase brand. Spark does not include every service; Blaze is metered, and SQL Connect has Cloud SQL costs and its own trial conditions. A budget alert should not be mistaken for a hard spending stop.
Before you commit
- Choose Firestore, SQL Connect or another specific database service explicitly.
- Model one customer journey and count reads, writes, listeners, storage and egress.
- Test authorization with anonymous and second-account access using disposable data.
- Check service eligibility, billing requirements, budget alerts and a recovery procedure before launch.
