n8n for Solo Founders: Cloud Costs, Self-Hosting & Fit
Evaluate n8n for repeatable SaaS operations: Cloud execution limits, annual pricing, self-hosting responsibilities and a practical workflow reliability checklist.

Editorial judgment
Automate one repeatable operation you can recover when it fails.
Consider n8n after a recurring operational task has a clear input, expected outcome and owner. For example, collect a qualified signup, enrich it from an allowed API and prepare a follow-up for human review. Keep the application database as the source of truth. A visual workflow still needs explicit error handling, duplicate protection and a way to recover missed work; it should not quietly become your only record of a customer or payment.
Official facts
What the provider documents
The facts below come from the dated official sources linked beside each entry. Use them to check the workflow and plan constraints before trying this tool; fit, budget cautions and evaluation steps are our editorial judgments.
- Cloud Starter displays €20 per month billed annually, including 2,500 monthly workflow executions and five concurrent executions. This is an annual-billing price, not a month-to-month quote. [Source 1]
- The pricing FAQ defines an execution as one run of the whole workflow, irrespective of its number of steps. Cloud trial limits differ from paid plans; the Cloud trial does not require a card. [Source 1]
- Source availability does not grant unrestricted reuse: the Sustainable Use License limits use to internal business purposes or non-commercial/personal use, and enterprise-designated code has separate terms. [Source 2]
A good fit when
- You have a repeatable internal task and can explain what should happen after each input.
- You can maintain API credentials, inspect execution failures and reconcile incomplete work.
Reconsider when
- A simple application function or scheduled script would solve the entire problem with less operational overhead.
- You intend to resell or embed the workflow platform without checking the applicable licence, or need a self-hosted service without anyone maintaining it.
Editorial interpretation
Read the bill beyond the headline
Estimate execution volume and concurrency rather than the number of nodes drawn on screen. Starter’s annual price does not cover every plan, and external API or model charges need a separate estimate. Self-hosting also consumes infrastructure and maintenance time. Compare the complete operating cost with a small script or manual process before adding another service. We have not run this workflow, measured time saved or established that your intended use is licensed.
Before you commit
- Map one bounded workflow with sample inputs, its source of truth and a clear success condition before connecting live systems.
- Estimate scheduled runs and event-triggered runs separately. A daily job is roughly 30 runs per month; 100 incoming events each day is roughly 3,000 before additional runs. Verify counting rules for your workflow.
- Test a duplicate input, a timeout and a downstream API failure with disposable data. Make writes idempotent and provide a manual recovery route.
- Use narrowly scoped credentials and inspect what execution logs retain. Require human review before a workflow sends sensitive messages or performs irreversible actions.
- Choose Cloud or self-hosting deliberately. For self-hosting, assign upgrades, backups and recovery; check licensing before designing a customer-facing or resale use.
